Is plant leather durable? What to expect over years of wear
The question everyone asks before buying, answered without a promise we cannot keep.
Durability in a bag is rarely about the material alone. It is the material, the construction and the way it is treated, and only the first of those is fixed on the day you buy it.
What holds a bag together
A plant leather panel is cut, folded, edged and stitched exactly as a hide panel would be. The points that decide a bag's life are the same ones as always: the stitching along the base, the join where a handle meets the body, the edge finish, and the hardware. Ours are built to be the last things to give.
What actually wears a bag out
- Overloading, which strains the handle joins long before the surface
- Heat, including a closed car in a Dubai summer
- Solvents and household cleaners, which damage the finish
- Storing it crushed under other bags, which sets creases into the shape
Rain, and everyday life
A light shower is not a problem. Pat the surface dry with a soft cloth and let it finish at room temperature. What plant leather does not want is to be soaked, dried with heat, or put away damp.
What we will and will not claim
We are not going to publish a number of years, because a bag carried daily and a bag carried on occasion are not the same bag. What we will say is that ours are designed to be kept rather than replaced, that the care routine is short, and that nothing about plant leather asks you to accept less than you would from any fine piece.
A bag lasts as long as the habits around it. Ours are built so those habits are easy.
