How to care for plant leather so it lasts for years
Plant leather asks for very little. What it asks for, it asks for consistently.
A bag that is looked after quietly, week after week, outlives one that is rescued occasionally. Plant leather makes that easy, because the routine is short.
Everyday cleaning
Wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. For a mark that will not lift, use a cloth barely dampened with water, work gently in one direction, then let the piece dry naturally away from direct sun. Nothing abrasive, and nothing soaked.
What to avoid
- Solvents, alcohol, bleach and household cleaners
- Conditioning oils and waxes made for animal hide
- Direct heat, radiators, and long spells in a hot car
- Prolonged pressure against sharp objects, which can leave an impression
Storage
Store the bag upright in its dust bag, loosely filled so the silhouette keeps its shape, somewhere cool and out of direct light. Empty the pockets before you put it away, and let the handles rest rather than fold.
Rain, water and heat
A light shower is not a problem. Pat the surface dry with a soft cloth and let it finish drying on its own, at room temperature. Never use a hairdryer, and never leave a damp bag closed inside a cupboard.
